Aging
White hair is usually considered as a sign of aging. As we age, the production of melanin in the hair root reduces, and a large number of hair can grow simply without the pigment. Melanin is produced by the stem cells known as melanocytes, that are located at the base of the hair follicle. When these cells starts to die while aging, the production of melanin gets impaired. However, the age at which a person would experience white hair depends on genetics, as it is inherited by people from their parents.
Genetic Factors
Premature white hair of hair depends on hereditary factors. If your one or both the parents have experienced premature white or white hair, you are also likely to face this problem at a young age. Many times, some individuals are born with white hair due to genetic factors. In the genetic abnormality called albinism, one is born with white or blond hair, due to the presence of very little pigment in hair.
Vitamin Deficiency
Apart from aging and genetic factors, hair color can change due to deficiency of certain important vitamins. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can be considered as one of the most common premature white hair causes. In such a condition, taking vitamin B12 supplements or including foods rich in this vitamin can prevent further white hair of hair.
Thyroid Disorders
Thyroid disorders like, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can also manifest in premature white hair, along with many other symptoms. The hair can become very dry and brittle due to thyroid problems, and many people can experience significant hair loss due to an overactive or under active thyroid gland.
Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a condition, characterized by the destruction of the melanin producing cells, which can be caused by autoimmune, genetic, as well as some environmental factors. The destruction of the melanin producing cells, called melanocytes, causes the development of white patches in the skin and hair.
Stress and Anxiety
Stress is known to cause a great many health problems including, premature white hair. Individuals going through a prolonged period of mental stress, as well as those suffering from any serious disease can often witness premature hair white hair over a period of time. This is because, both mental stress, anxiety and severe illness can adversely affect the production of melanin.
Pernicious Anemia
It is an autoimmune condition, where the antibodies produced by the immune system attack some specific stomach cells, that impair the absorption of vitamin B12. Deficiency of vitamin B12 causes anemia or deficiency of red blood cells, which can present many symptoms including premature white hair.

causes of white hair

White hair has always been something of a mystery. Sure, as people age, they go white – everybody knows that. But up until recently, no one really understood why white hair is a common “side effect” of aging. There are all sorts of “beliefs” around the causes of white hair like too much stress or teenagers.
Researchers Take On White Hair
One of the reasons that we know so little about the causes of white hair is because no one has really tried to figure it out. But now, with some many people aging and interested in looking younger, the business case for figuring out white hair is very becoming compelling. Here is what they have figured out:
Hydrogen Peroxide Causes White Hair
As you age, the amount of hydrogen peroxide in your hair increases. This happens because hydrogen peroxide (believe it or not) is produced naturally in your body. When levels in hair build up, it (essentially) bleaches out your normal hair color and leaves with white hair.
Why Does Hydrogen Peroxide Build Up and Cause White Hair?
What happens is that an enzyme in your body (called catalase) usually breaks down the hydrogen peroxide. But, as you age, your body produces less and less catalase, leaving a surplus of hydrogen peroxide.
